Volkswagen Repair: 1999 GOLF overheating, coolant level, engine coolant

Question
I have a 1999 Golf manual transmission/1.9 L engine.  Coolant level is fine, but
out of the blue it started making a whining noise (cyclical: it got faster when the
RPMs increased) and then the overheat light started blinking.  When I came
home, I noticed a stain on the asphalt where I park, from some kind of leak.
Any thoughts most appreciated!

Answer
Hi there, JL;
It is the water pump.  Have the timing belt and tensioner replaced at the same time.  Do you live in Louisiana?  I have a cousin named JL that I haven't seen or heard from for 20 years or more.  Originally from Kentucky.  Anyway, hope this helps you get your Golf repaired.  Good luck, JL.
