Volkswagen Repair: 95 Jetta 2.0 oil pump gasket leaking bad!!!, pan gasket, jetta 2

Question
How do I remove the oil filter assembly from the engine block to replace the gasket.  It looks like I need special tools to remove the top half to get access to the two set screws on the bottom. I just changed the oil pan gasket thinking this was the nature of the oil leak, but was not the case.

Answer
Hi Phil;
The oil filter is attached to the oil cooler.  There are 2 hoses, and 1 nut that hold the assembly to the engine.  The hoses are usually the hardest things to get off, but if you use a screwdriver, or even a small, angled pick tool, you can get them loose enough to let go, after the clamps have been slid back on the hose material far enough to get some flexibility in them.  Then the nut needs to be removed and the whole oil cooler assembly will slide off of the threaded pipe that holds it up against the engine block.  The nut is a 27 mm I think.Good luck Phil, I hope you find this to be helpful.
