Volkswagen Repair: Keyless remote entry, door latch, scan tool

Question
I have a 1999 Jetta. The keyless remote entry quit working last night. I thought it was that particular remote but when I got the spare one, it also didn't work. Are you familiar with a problem like this and can it be resolved easily?

Answer
Hi Diane;
"Master keys" have to be "adapted" to the car.  When you got the new master key, was it properly adapted?  A scan tool has to be used, and the only scan tool that works is at the dealer.  There are also letter codes in the part number that HAVE to match from one to the other, and they only work for that year of car, so one from 2001 won't "adapt" to your 1999, even though they look identical.
There is another cause that is probably more likely than adaption, or coding, and that is the drivers door latch often goes bad, and it communicates with the comfort module for remote access to the car.  If it's broke....it can't communicate!
The best way to tell if it's the door latch is to open the driver's door, and see if the light s come on in the interior, if they do, then it's probably the comfort module that needs to be replaced.  If they don't then it's almost 100% likely that the driver's door latch needs to be replaced.
Check, and see.  Hope this helps you a little bit, Diane. Good luck!
