Volkswagen Repair: accessory power, society of automotive engineers, volt power

Question
QUESTION: where is the hood release on a 2003 Jetta? I cannot seem to locate it

ANSWER: Hi Rich;
The hood release is just inside the drivers' door, right next to the door seal, under the dashboard.  I usually refer to this as the "kick panel."  Hope this helps you out.
Good luck.

QUESTION: Related to a 2003 Jetta, when the engine is off and key removed, should there be power to the accessory 12 volt supply connection. I have a garmin nuvi and questioning whether I have to unplug it when I shut the engine off.  Similarly, and should the LCD odometer remain on and the radio powered with the engine off and the key removed

Answer
Hi there, again, Rich;
There are several circuits in Volkswagen that remain energized even when the key is out, and the ignition is off.  If you have the radio on, and then turn the car off, and pull the key out, the radio will quit playing, but if you then turn the radio on without putting the key in, or turning the car the radio will play for about 30 minutes.  For a passenger who has to wait for you to go into a store for a few things so they have something to do while you are gone.  Additionally, the 12 Volt "power points" will remain energized.  I believe that these circuits are referred to in Volkswagen technical jargon as "30 power."  The circuit that runs the starter motor is called "50 power," and the stuff that runs while the engine is on is running off of "15 power."  This is a system that is universally applied to all German automobile manufacturers, and similar to the battery tests being done with respect to "DIN," or the German equivalent of the "Society of Automotive Engineers," or "SAE" in the United States.
The LCD mileage display will stay on, as long as there is at least 9 Volts of available voltage in the battery.  If the battery voltage falls below this number the display will go out.
Hope this helps Rich.  Good luck.
