I was driving to work and the egine symbol came on simentaniosly with a symbol that looks like two upsidedown handwritten  o's the engine light came on and is steady but the other symbol is flashing. there seems to be nothing wrong with the car. I have about 150000 k and it has been well maintained

Answer
Hi Del;
It sounds like the glow plug circuit to me.  The glow plugs can corrode...even just a little bit...and their resistance increases, and the ECM recognizes this, and will set a code.  The two upsidedown handwritten o's sound like the Glow Plug symbol.  They are fairly easy to change, but I'd get a second opinion, since I can't physically see what you are describing.  You also have to be careful when changing the glow plugs, or the "power strip" that feeds electricity to them...the "power strip" can cause this same thing to occur.  Anyway, if it's the plugs, they are either "BERU," or "BOSCH."  Don't intermix the 2 brands, and don't change from one brand to the other.  If they are "BERU," replace them with "BERU."   ETC.  Good luck, Del.  Hope this helps you out!
