Volkswagen Repair: Air conditioner conversion of R-12 to R134a, volkswagon golf, golf gl

Question
I have a 1989 volkswagon golf gl and I want to change over the refrigerant to r-12 to r134a.  I don't know how much my system holds.  The label is mess up under the hood.  To let me know how much r-12 is needed.  I need to know this so I can figure how much r134 to use.  Thanks Crystal

Answer
Hi Crystal;
The Passat from that year holds 600 grams.  I believe the system you are working with, if it is a factory installed system calls for 500 grams.
The most important difference, besides the refrigerant itself is the oil for the compressor, so make sure you have enough PAG, or Ester Oil to replace the Mineral Oil that was used with R-12.
I hope this helps you get your project done with good results, Crystal.  Good luck.
