Volkswagen Repair: 2000 Golf 1.8t wont start, rubber gloves, good shape

Question
hello I have a question about my 2000 golf 1.8t. the check engine light came on I parked and shut off the car, about an hour later I started it and the light was still on and I as I put it in first gear and started taking off the car shut off  and it won't start. when I try to start it it makes a sound but it won't crank over. I had a one of those "back door mechanics" look at it and he told me that he thinks the timing belt broke and that it bent my valves. the car has only 75000miles on it and I baby it. I had local volkswagon service check the timing belt at 65000 and they said that it was in good shape. I need some advise please. thank you

Answer
Hi Neris;
I suppose it's possible that the timing belt is broken, but it's fairly easy to see.  Even a "back door mechanic" could have done that in a short time.  In fact, Neris, you can do that much yourself.  It's kind of crowded in there but on the passenger side of the engine, there is a black plastic cover with 2 clips on it one in front(easy to see), and one in back just the same(not as easy to see).  Just release those 2 clips pull the cover toward the fender, and touch the belt below the pulley.  It'll be real dirty, so wear some rubber gloves.  Let me know what you find out.  Good luck.
