Volkswagen Repair: Exhaust 94 v.passat 1,8 petrol, stroke diesel, exhaust components

I have changed the back two exhaust boxes,spark plugs, dist cap,the engine sounds ok but the exhaust sounds like a boat with a two stroke diesel engine,can,t smell anything wrong with the catalystor.

Hi Paul;
When you changed all of the exhaust components, did you use the factory style hangers with the little rubber..."double donuts?"  If not there is a good chance the exhaust is rattling against the underside of the car in a couple of places.  It is also possible that the catalytic converter is no longer in one piece.  There is a brick inside the catalytic converter that can become loose, and rattle.  Check those things out, and I'll bet you locate your noise.
