i have a 2001 VW Jetta, the wipers were moving very slowly, and now have stopped, what could be the problem??  Possibly a fuse, motor or wiring please help...thank you

Answer
Hi Dianne;
Unfortunately, it's the wiper motor.  It has to be replaced.  Not real hard, but not real easy either.  The wiper motor is under the "cowl" piece that is made of black plastic, at the base of the windshield.  The rubber dam has to be removed, the plastic covers on the 13mm hex head nuts have to be removed, then the hex head nuts on the wiper arms, then the real fun part(NOT), getting the wiper arms to let go, and getting a sense of where they were on the "splines" when you need to replace them...then the wiper assembly needs to come out, then the wiper motor needs to come off of the assembly, and while we're talking alignment, the nut on the drive eccentric has to be loosened, and removed, and then reassembled, and tightened, and then reinstalled into the car.  Then the black plastic windshield cowl, then the wiper arms, and tested...if it's not right, guess what?  Oh yeah, it all comes apart again, and again, etc.
Do you want to do this your self?  If so, there are complete instructions, with diagrams in the "Bentley's" repair manual.  The hardest part is just getting the wiper arms off, and back on, in most cases.  Where the hinges are, PUSH...real hard, that will get them loose.  You might want to mark them with paint, and a scribe too, just for a close approximation for realignment.  Good luck, Dianne.
