Answer
Hello Ruby, sorry it took me so long to get back to anyone.  My computer, my own, got a virus, and locked up too.
The transmission sounds like it needs to be removed, and rebuilt.  There are 2 main shafts, and an intermediate shaft in the 4, and 5 speed manual transmissions.  There is separate "spur" gear that is attached to the case that allows for reverse.  The first of the 2 main shafts has had a problem before, it seems, from your description, and now, it is behaving the same way again.  Without being able to get my hands on the transmission, and test it for myself, I'd have to say that the support, or carrier bearings, as well as some other parts by now, have so much play in them that the shaft cannot be moved inside the case to engage, or change gears.  It has to come out, and be rebuilt.  Big job.  Big money.  Sorry.  Take it to someone you trust Ruby, not just the cheapest guy.  You usually get what you pay for and sometimes less, when it's the cheapest guy.
Good luck.
