Volkswagen Repair: battery installation, four digits, volkswagen dealer

Question
i did not know how high tech vw had gotten, and i unplugged the battery for own reasons (battery did not need replacing). now the stereo does not turn on. it just says SAFE and  four digits appear. what can i do?

Answer
There is a small chance that there is a sticker in the trunk area of the car that has the radio serial number(14 digits long, with a bunch of letters too).  It will read something like VWZ4Z7R1111111.  If it is there, just below the serial number is a four digit number like, 0111.  The radio preset buttons correspond to the display in the radio.  SAFE should be the first thing you see, and then in 30 seconds or less the SAFE word should change to four zero's.  Push the number 1 preset button to change the first digit to what the radio wants, #2 preset for the second position, and so on.  Once all four digits are entered, push "seek," you should hear a beep, and the radio will be operable.  If not, then push "scan," after the digits are entered, the tone will sound, and the radio will work.  If not then seek, and scan at the same time after the code is entered.  Depending on which version, and model year, the method for entering the code, and starting the radio differ.  If the code is not in the trunk, on the little sticker, you have to remove the radio to get the serial number off of it.  There is a slight chance the radio was replaced and the code sticker is still on it as well.  However, if it is not, then take the car, and your registration, showing you as the owner of the car, to your local Volkswagen dealer, and they can get the code for you.  This may, or may not be a free service, so be prepared to pay for one-half hour of labor time, at least, and once you have the code, write it down, and save it someplace where you know where it is, in case this happens again.  There is one final place to look for the code, and that is in the owners manual, on an overleaf, or folded page inside the front cover of the instruction manual for Radio, or Stereo.  Good luck, I hope these instructions help you get your radio back on.
