Volkswagen Repair: 2002Jetta EPC light, rear brakes, brake switch

Question
My 2002 Jetta won't go into gear.  It has 63000 miles on it.  It starts with no problem, had a new battery put in 3 weeks ago at my regular mechanic along with rear brakes, pads and cylinders, and last night on my way home the EPC light won't go out.  So the "put your foot on the brake light" also stays on, and we can't get the car into gear. My daughter looked at it and the rear brake light don't come on when I step on the brake.Help!

Answer
The epc is the electronic pedal control. The problem your having is a bad brake switch. To release from park you can try stepping on the brake pedal over and over again till the park safety light on the console goes out. If unable to then start the car take the shift knob and try to press down like shifting into reverse. Hold the shifter there and turn the car off and pull out the key. Or cycle the key. till the shifter slides into reverse. Now to get into drive you have to by pass neutral. Do the same step as you did to get into reverse. To fix this problem you have to replace the brake switch. It is under the shelf above the brake pedal. There is no reset button.
