Volkswagen Repair: 2001 Jetta Coolant, aluminum head, pep boys

Question
The coolant light comes on when I first start my Jetta then goes off. It looks like I need coolant and in the owner's manual it says to put in coolant bought at the Volkswagen dealer or it may ruin the engine. Is this true or can I put in regular coolant from Kragen's or Pep Boys?

Answer
Do not put in regular coolant. No green, purple, or yellow coolant. Your vehicle has a aluminum head and plastic coolant pipes and flange. Normal ethanol glycol which is typically green will turn your aluminum head into sand or small rocks. This will cost big bucks. Please use g-12 Volkswagen pink coolant from the dealer. Typically $30.00 a gallon and is not premixed. 50/50 concentrate is needed prior to topping off our coolant. Half water and half coolant. Fill the level to the top dash or the bottom of the book. Do not fill it up when it is hot. Fill the coolant bottle when the engine is cold. Best when sitting over night. Filling the coolant when the engine is hot will cause pressure to spray coolant 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit all over you. These coolant bottles have to be topped of with oil periodically. If you have a leak then the leak needs to be fixed. Check the coolant Flange on the drivers side of the engine for pink crust. Or any pink crust or liquid anywhere under the hood. If this doesn't correct the problem then you have a electrical problem which is unlikely. Thank You and keep in touch.
