Volkswagen Repair: Bad Coil?, oxnard st, van nuys ca

Question
1984 1.8 rabbit GTI 120,000mi   While driving at any speed, I will suddenly have a loss in power,If I engage the clutch when i feel the car cut out I noticed it still running. This will happen in the same spots when going through my neighborhood.I've replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter.Nothing helped. I then replaced the vacuum diaphram on the distributor.I then noticed the rpm changed, loss of power, run badly, but will run good at times for a couple minutes.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Answer
The first thing I would do is check the two fuel pumps. First open up the hatch and in the trunk area underneath the mat there will be a metal cover with three screws on it. This is where the pre fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit are. If the prepump has not been changed in a while, definitely put a new one in. Then if this doesn't solve your problem, change the main fuel pump underneath the car on the right side rear in front of the rear axle. You can tell if the fuel pump is going bad sometimes it will make a loud buzzing noise. Next I would check the Halls sender in the distributor. If this is bad your spark will be weak. Maybe check the pressure in the fuel distributor. Check compression and timing too. You have to find what symtoms your car is showing. Example: low compression;weak spark;improper fuel mixture shown by the color on the spark plugs;. Start at the simplist things first and work your way up to more complicated things.
