Volkswagen Repair: MIL-Jetta 1.8L turbo-2002, obd ii scanners, malfunction indicator light

Question
Hi,
The ignition coils were supposedly change by the VW dealer after they finally conceded that there were major problems.  I have my car served regularly, never miss a check up and the Malfunction Indicator Light keeps going on.  My service person check the ecu and the codes relate to ignition and states that certain updates need to be done to the computer and there are known problems that need to be tended to by VW.  I went to see my dealer and when I mentioned the computer, he tells me the Jetta does NOT have a computer just a unit that stores info.

THey say they fixed everything and refuse to acknowledge ongoing problems with the coils etc.
What do you suggest?  And is there a computer(s) in the car?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Deborah, thank you for your question.  I have to question the experience or knowledge of the VW dealer.  ALL vehicles shipped to the USA since 1996 have been required to have an ECU compatible with OBD II scanners.  Reason for this is fro the EPA.  So, you might want to check with a different dealer instead and ask that dealer to report the first dealer to VWOA.   There are some problems with the 2001- 2003 Jetta from want I have read on various website about problems with ignition, electrical, and engine mechanical.
Hope that helps
