Volkswagen Repair: 01 Passat V6 engine light, obd ii scanner, vw passat v6

Hi Don,

I have a 2001 VW Passat V6 with a persistant check engine light.  

The car runs well, nothing seems wrong, no problems other than the light being on.

I had a local mechanic put it on a machine and it told him that it was an E4 code.  Unfortunately his employer doesn't provide him with the materials to know what an E4 code is.  He said if he knew he could probably fix it.

Any idea what an E4 code means?

Deborah, thank you for your question.  Usually the OBD II scanner produces a P0XXX number like P0010.  I don't find anything on an E4 code.  Now it is possible that that code is for a part, component or error that is a “dealer item only” codes.  You might want to find an Autozone or Orielly's that will scan that code.  They will tell you want it is in the format of a P0XXX code.
