Volkswagen Repair: volkswagen vento bizare problem, volkswagen vento, battery cables

Question
Hi,
My car is a 1993 Volkswagen Vento 1.8CL, on petrol. I have the next problem with it: the engine stop working after a while (usualy 10-15 minutes), only when in charge. The simptoms: first the engine looses it's power, run for 1-2 seconds, then the lamps on the panel lights on indicating that the engine is stopped. Then I have to wait up to 5-6 minutes until the engine can start again.
I verified during such a stop: the electrical fuel pump - it runs, but I cannot measure the pression as I don't have the necessary equipments, the pump relay - it triggers, the ignition - the electrical signal is generated. Also, the fuel filter is brand new, there is not a problem with the vacuum in the fuel tank, as I figured the problem even going with the fuel tank opened (without the cap). Could be the ignition distributor?

Thank you,
Calin

Answer
Calin, thank you for your question.  Yes, the problem could very well be the distributor cap and probably the rotor too.  Some thing that could also be the problem is the charging system itself.  You could have a bad regulator in the alternator, the alternator or battery could be about to die, or the battery cables or corroded. Any one or a combination of those things can cause the same problem.
Hope that helps
