Volkswagen Repair: Which oil to choose?, vw jetta, vw passat

Question
Hi. I have a '95 VW Jetta GLIII and '99 VW Passat (20v turbo). A friend of mine recommended using synthetic oil for the Passat but just regular oil for the Jetta. Another recommended using synthetic once in a while, but yet another one recommended against switching oil types. I've been using regular oil on both but do you have a recommendation and anything I should keep an eye on if I decide to keep use regular on both cars? Thanks much in advance.

Answer
Alex, thank you for your question. The type or kind of oil to use can get rather complicated to describe.  Here is a link for more information about engine oil (http://wolfsburgii.e2u.cc/oilw.htm) usually switching between types is not a problem (check your warranty information or with the dealer).  The bad thing is using two different weights at the same time. Like mixing 20w50 and 5w30 together.  Synthetics like AMSOIL are very costly but also only require changing every 20,000 to 25,000 miles.  While all of the rest are around 3 to 5,000 miles.  And mixing synthetic and non synthetic is also a bad thing.
Hope that helps
