Volkswagen Repair: Transmission fluids, o reily, 4 quarts

Question
Hello,
We have a 1995 Jetta III GLS and we are replacing our transmission in it. I would like to know how much fluid do I need to replace & what type or brand is better to put in?
Thank You for your help...

Answer
Cindy, thank you for your question.  I had to do a little checking to find out that there was a change in transmissions in that year model.  There are two versions, one with a dipstick and one without a dipstick.  This is very critical.  As far as the amount of fluid, I have seen transmissions take 3 to 4 quarts to as much as 8 to 9 quarts for total refill (including the torque converter).  The brand of transmission fluid is a tough one.  Typically, I have used Valvoline and Chevron.  I stay away from any of the “no name” brands out there (unless the transmission is leaking and going bad). The type recommended is AUDI/VOLKSWAGEN Approved Fluid #G-052-162 (-A1,-A2) [as I found on both Autozone and O'Reily's].  This should be listed on the bottle of transmission fluid.  After checking several auto parts stores carry it, such as AutoZone and O'Reilly's (you will need to check with you local store to see if they have it in stock).  There are synthetic brands that are also good.  P.S. even the VW dealer had a tough time with this!
Hope this helps
