Volkswagen Repair: water intrusion, water intrusion, drain tube

Question
1997 Jetta, everytime it rains the passinger side floor area gets soaked.  Car was involved in a minor front end collision 5 months ago and some front end repair was necessary.  The car did not start having a leak until now. The windshield appears to be OK but I'm not sure about the seal.  We have had the car for 5 years.  It has about 133,000 miles on it.  Preliminary investigation indicates that water is comming in somewhere from above the bottom of the dash, it does not appear to be comming in at the floor panel area.

Answer
Eddie, thank you for your question.  A problem like this can happen after front end accidents.  Areas to check are where the hood meets the body nearest to the windshield. There is a slight possibility that the seal on the windshield is compromised.  But the best bet is from the vent on the outside of the car.  If a vent gets a crack in it, it will cause the plastic portion (interior of the car) of the AC ducting to start leaking water.  If you have a sun roof, the drain tube runs through door pillar.  Should that tube be damaged, it will also leak.  This type of leak might also be (if it is coming from the same side as the accident took place on) the pillar by the windshield and where the door attaches to.  It can also be a door seal.  If the hit is hard enough, it will cause the body to flex and twist, which can cause a whole host of problems.
Hope this helps
