Volkswagen Repair: 72 VW Bus, wheel chocks, running errands

Question
First off, good help on the fan window repair...  Now, about the
starter/battery.  When the bus has been running for awhile, let's
say, running errands, at times starting gets a bit dicey.  There
will be nothing, like a dead battery (though I know the battery is
fine) then maybe a few seconds later a tired sounding start
attempt then it will turn over.  Other times, when hot, it will take
a few seconds longer than normal to turn over.  When cold, as in
the morning, this problem does not occur.  What am I looking to
work on here?  I have cleaned the battery connections.

Answer
John, thank you for your question.  This will take two people to find the problem.  One to turn the key and the other to listen (no joke).  The second person may have to crawl under the bus (be sure to use wheel chocks).  The will need to listen for the click of the solenoid.  If it clicks then the solenoid MAY be ok.  At this point the brushes in the starter may be bad or severely worn.  But should the solenoid not click it is quite probably bad.  Also make sure the high current line to the starter is clean.  Any corrosion will cause it to not make good contact.  Also check the ground wire and positive lead on the battery to see if they have any corrosion.
Hope this helps
