Volkswagen Repair: my car wont start unless....., car wont start, internal regulator

Question
My 1991 volkswagon passat (159000 miles) wont start unless someone pushes me and I pop the clutch. I had a light accident 3 days ago on the driver side in the front, (right above the left front tire) but my car started no prob after the accident. Then the next day my wife drove the car and it stalled on her and she couldnt get it started again. So the next day when I went to work the car started right up and I didnt think there was a problem. This  morning I went to work and no problem. Then about 1:00 pm I tried to start it and it didnt turn over, so I had someone push me and I poped the clutch and the car started. So I got home and thought if I let it sit for awile it might start again. It hasant. So im not sure what its doing. I dont know if its the starter because my friend at work tryed to bypass the ignition and start it by touching the starter with a srcewdriver. The starter turned but the car didnt start. Well to say the least Im not a mechanic and I dont have a clue what its doing. I work at a dealership and we have a service dept but none of them no crap about volkswagons. Any help would be appreicated. Thank you.
Ronnie.

Answer
Ronnie, thank you for your question.  My first thought was YIKES!  Sounds like a combination of the computer got jarred, loose connections very close to the point of impact and dead starter relay.  but i would bet on that there is a loose connection or the electrical box that is sometimes located in the area of your impact maybe to blame.  Also something else can be the alternators internal regulator maybe shot.  those things hate accidents.  i have had to replace a few after an accident.  in any case those are some of the areas to check.  Electrical is one the hardest things to diagnose without being there in person to see it. if you plan on keeping the jetta for a while longer you might want to get a Bently manual on it.  those manuals are the best by far.  http://www.bentleypublishers.com/
hope that helps
