Volkswagen Repair: VW Heat Channels, heater channels, problem water

Question
Hi, I have a 1968 Beetle that has rusted heat channels, I have
had other beetles in the past with the same problem (water
entering the cab from outside due to rain and snow). Is the only
solution to cut out the old heat channel and weld in new ones,
or can the bad spots be cut out and patched? Does the heat
channel provide structural integrity to the bug? Ive heard both
sides to the story, is patching heat channels just plain butcher
work? Thanks a lot.

Answer
Daniel, thank you for your question.  I have never had to go through this procedure.  But you could try using fiberglass.  Yes, as far as i know the heater channels are important to the structural integrity of the beetle.  If you have photos of this area that would be very helpful for more information, you can reach me at don@wolfsburgii.com  I could use photos of the whole area, top, bottom, and side to side.  Also fiberglass will not hold infinitely.  It might hold 10 years if properly applied.
