Volkswagen Repair: Hood latch, hood latch, glove box

I have a '69 bug and I think the wire from the latch to the lever might be broken. I need to replace it but I am wondering if you know any way that I can open the hood to get to the wire. I dont have any tension on the lever, although it does move up and down. Any informtion would be greatly appreciated

This is a GREAT question.  I thank you for asking it.  I had to do a little research and found two different answers for you. One deals with cutting up the hood latch and the other is destoying the glove box.
