Volkswagen Repair: 1991 VW Jetta Gas pedal sticks, fail to recoil, vw jetta, throttle arm

Question
I have 1991 VW Jetta 5 spd manual. I recently got gas pedal cable replaced because the old one got snapped. Unfortunately while on a high way, the gas pedal would not recoil back so the car kept moving at constant speed. Fortunately I got into an exit and was able to stop with engine idling at extremely high revolutions. I have spoken to the mechanic who replaced the cable and he is baffled. Can you help?
Thanks for your help

Answer
Diamond,
Jettas are not my thing but I'd unhook the cable from the throttle arm on the engine to see if the cable is sticking or the throttle assembly is hanging up. Without seing the car it's hard to say but I'd have your mechanic go back through to see where the problem is. I hope this helps!
