Volkswagen Repair: idle control or computer, vw gti, vw specialist

Question
I have a '98 VW GTI, about 95,000mi. I just recently got the cat replaced. About 1 week later i went to leave for work, got to the end of my road and my car just died. Now, when i try to start it, my engine revs all the way up to red line then shuts off. However, if i pump the gas and keep the rpm's above 10 or 15, it will stay on. Spark plugs? Computer? Throtle cable? Please help, I'm at my wits end. :)

Answer
Hey Amanda,
Sorry for the delayed reply! I'm no water cooled VW mechanic by no means so I'm not really sure what's going on with your VW. I doubt if it's the throttle cable and I'm pretty sure we can rule out the spark plugs being the problem. It sounds to me like the computer or a sensor is throwing a fit. This is one case where the dealer or your local VW specialist might be the way to go. Sorry that I wasn't much help to you. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!
