Volkswagen Repair: 96 VW Cabrio, phillips screw, flat screwdriver

While driving, sputtered and shut down cold. . .nothing. . .no electrical, etc. . .tried to restart but key seemed to only go 90% of rotation. . .nothing happened, lights etc were OK. . .but engine didn't even tryto turn over. . .bypassed started. . .engine would try but nothing. . .pulled plug wire. . .no spark to plugs. . .is there a safety or shut off?. inline?. . .and is it posible ingition switch went bad?. . .is there an aftermarket part?. . .your thoughts are appreciated!

You're on the right track, remove the lower steering column cover, and unplug the ignition switch. Plug in a new switch and try starting with a flat screwdriver.  

If this works, you'll need to remove the steering wheel, wiper switch assembly, and the ignition lock assembly.
Remove the phillips screw and replace the switch.
