Volkswagen Repair: 1998 VW Jetta GL Wiper Switch Relay, vw jetta, aluminum bracket

Question
Hi,

I bought a 98 Jetta a few months back and just noticed that the intermittent setting on the wiper switch does not work. It clicks like that is a position on the switch so I am assuming this car is equipped with this feature...never know with this one since it still has manual windows..anyway, all the other positions on the switch work, low, high and the fluid.  I called the dealer for quote on a new switch and they suggest I check the wiper relay first.  Having never owned a VW before, I have not a clue where to find this.  Any ideas?  Your help would be appreciated.  thanks!

Answer
Mariana,

Take off the bottom cover under the steering wheel and you should see the relays behind the aluminum bracket.  With the key turned on to light up the warning lights, turn the wiper switch to intermittent and listen for a click from the relay. If you don't hear it turn the wipers on and off manually and listen for the click.  I don't know the exact location of the wiper relay, but you should feel it move when it clicks.

Good luck,

Paul
