Volkswagen Repair: Ignition/Electrical Problem, windshield wipers, vw jetta

Question
Hi Paul-

I have a 97 VW Jetta 2.0L with a standard transmission and 160K miles on it.  I have a bad bearing in my alternator, which will be replaced tomorrow.  I believe my other problem is unrelated to the bad alternator - as it is working, but wearing down.

After I start my car and disengage the handbrake, the "brake" light is dimly lit (should be off).  At the same time, my driving lights, windshield wipers, and a/c or heating vents dont work.  I can push the key forward more, which causes all of the above will work and the "brake" light goes out. However, the key doesnt stay in that far position and turns back toward me.  If I jiggle the key in multiple directions, after a few minutes I'll find the sweet spot where the lights and other accessories will come on.  Then driving down the road, there is a high probability that the lights will go out and the "brake" light is dimly lit again.  While attempting to get the lights back on I am constantly flashing my headlights at other drivers!

I think that I need a new ignition switch.  However, it could also be bad wires or maybe even a shortage.

The other day I drove to work, in the dark, and had to hold the key forward all the way with one hand while attempting to shift my car with the other and steer with my knee. What an episode! And how dangerous!

Please advise me of what you think the problem may be and how involved the repair will be.  Im very tight on money so I hestitate to take my car to a VW dealer, but I know they will get the job done right.

Thanks so much

Becky :)

Answer
Becky,

I think changing the alternator will fix your problem.
When the alternator is worn it may not get a good connection and charge, let the mechanic changing the alternator know about the lights. Current will flow through any circuit to get to ground and that may be why your other circuits may be glowing.

You may need an ignition switch, but fix the alternator first.

Good luck,

Paul
