Volkswagen Repair: Diagnosis, vacuum leaks, volkswagen jetta

Question
I Have a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta III GLS. The Mileage is about 175,000 (approximate), In Hawaii climate, comes from some very unknowledgable and very neglative owners, the car has been worked on from a few mechanics who failed to diagnose it. Im a Learning mechanic whos trully motivated to get this car running again because of its potential. Before the car stopped running, it had starting problems. I spent over a $1000 on parts. It used to die out on hills and stall. It currently now doesnt start at all. Ive changed the coil, distributor, and fuel pump. It still doesnt start. Ive been told to check the relay and replace the brain. But my theories was a failed sensor or a contaminated fuel tank. Right now I dont think It even has fuel pressure. Any suggestions? I really wanna get this car running again. Everyone has giving up except me. Please Help me.   THANKYOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Answer
Kawika,

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

This car has a habbit of vacuum leaks near the throttle body.  Try to move it back and forth, and watch for a loose base.  The rubber base cracks and leaks air.  The vacuum line to the right of the intake manifold also gets brittle and leaks, pinch it with your fingers and listen for leaks.

If none of these make a difference, do me a favour and check the compression, this will give me some idea of the condition of the engine.

Good Luck, never give up!

Paul
