Volkswagen Repair: Diesel with very little power, diesel engines, fuel economy

Question
Hi there, I just got a 2001 diesel Jetta TDI(88 000 km)a few weeks ago and have not been happy with it's performance on the highway and especially on hills.  In all gears, it severly losses power going up hills.  For example: cruizing at 110 km/hr and slowing down to 80 on a not very demanding hill.  On the flat highway, with the accelerator to the floor, the Jetta cannot exceed 125 km/hr. Even my 92 Civic with 360 000 km can outrace the Jetta on hills.  The car is in good shape otherwise and still seems to have good fuel economy. I'm afraid to take into the shop and get sold a $1500 story because I'm a woman.  I want to ask the right questions, armed with a bit of knowledge.  Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Maryse,

The diesel engines are known for "coking", the build up of carbon within the intake manifold.  You will need to send it to a mechanic, and have it checked and cleaned.  You should check the air and fuel filter as well they can cause the loss of power also.

Good Luck,

Paul
