Volkswagen Repair: Alternator and Ribbed Belt Replacement, vw golf tdi, vw golf tdi diesel

Question
Paul,

I have a 2000 VW Golf TDI Diesel. I have located the alternator on your site along with 2 possible belts. First, I just need to know the sizing dimensions for the replacement belt for this model VW. Second, the dealership informed me that the alternator has a "separate" pulley assembly that they charged extra ($129.00) for. I need to know if the alternator provided by allexperts.com comes with the pulley assembly. The alternator is a Bosch F4000-88529.

Thanks,
Tim

Answer
Tim,

The only two belts for that car are belts for engines with or without A/C.

The pulley assembly they talk about is the tensioner, it often "chirps" and "rattles".

If yours is quiet, it's OK.

If you want yours to remain "quiet", I've found that by drilling a small hole into the aluminum bracket (just ahead of the tensioning spring, behind and under the alternator), and inserting a grease fitting, allows me to pump some grease onto the tensioner shaft every six months and avoid wearing out the bushings.

Good Luck,

Paul
