Volkswagen Repair: Jetta Carat stalling, vw jetta, eliment

I was thinking about buying a '91 VW Jetta Carat from a private owner.  It has over 130,000 miles and the owner says that it runs great for a while then stalls out.  What do you think the problem is and is it worth buying for $600?

I'm not sure what to tell you.
Does the owner have service records?
I think the fuel filter may need replacing, as the sediment in the filter will settle at the bottom when the car is shut off. As you run the vehicle the sediment plugs the filter eliment and could starve the engine of fuel.

If you could check with the owner as to the age of that filter, it would help.
