96 volks passat 6 cyl.  engine keeps dying when foot is removed from gas pedal after starting. best idea why?   145,000 mi. on car

Do you have a Check Engine Light Displayed?  Take it to Autozone or somewhere like that to have it probed.  There are so many possibilities that diagnosis over the internet is nearly immpossible.  Getting them to diagnose it will likely steer you in the right direction first rather than random guessing.
