Volkswagen Repair: VW Passat Failure to Start, vw passat vr6, fuel pump relay

Question
Ryan,
I have a 1993 VW Passat, VR6, 2.8L.  My problems is this:  Car turn over good but will not start, not getting any fire.  I replaced the ignition coil but no luck.  The distributor is new, ECM is new - the iginition coil I took off was just under two years old, I have a new fuel pump and fuel regulator.  Before it stop running:  I was able to start the car but it kept getting harder and harder to start, then it woulden't start at all. I have been the dealer way, the local VW experts way and all I have is less money and the same problem.  I'm counting on you, thanks.

Answer
There are so many possibilities I dont know where to begin.  It could be anything from a bad ignition switch to a bad fuel pump relay to no gas in the tank.  After cranking it for awhile pull out a spark plug and have a look at it, smell like fuel? or is it dry?  Do you know how to check for spark?  Spark, fuel and air are the only things a car needs.  Does the car run when you "get it fixed"?  What have people said is the problem?

Spark - pull out a plug and leave it connected to the wire, hold the other end against the engine to ground it.  Get a friend to try and start the car (Where gloves otherwise you'll get a shock).  If you see spark, great! that part is over with, if you dont then check the power going to the coil should be 12V.  If you got power in and nothing out its probably the coil.

Fuel - much harder to diagnose,  if you have no spark the ECU will shut-off the fuel supply, so test for spark first.
I suggest getting a manual specific to your car. I suggest a manual written by Robert Bently there tho most expensive but they are the best.  The manual will have specific tests for all the fuel components.

If these places you have taken the car cannot diganose a no-start situation you should perhaps try somewhere else. Keep me posted with more info and progress.  I'm sure it will be something simple.

Good Luck,
Ryan
