Volkswagen Repair: 2001 Jetta Engine Problems, old fashion way, straight stream

Question
I own a 2001 Jetta with a 1.8T engine. Recently, the engine has been cutting out on me when I come to a stop. It happens whether the engine is warm or cold. I brought it to a dealer that said I had some codes pop up such as for the turbo and what not. They cleared the codes out of the computer and said, other than that they could find nothing else wrong. As I was driving it home, you guessed it, the engine started doing the same thing. It's almost like the RPM's get too low and it stalls. Usually they get down to a little over 500 rpm's. I was wondering what might be causing this? Also, my ASR light would illuminate for no reason and stay on until I shut off the vehicle. Upon starting it, the light was off.

Answer
Ya gotta wonder eh?  They had the computer check boxes in 72 Vans.  Trouble was, the shops did not have any computers to read those plug in boxes, so checking and fixing the car was still done the old fashion way.  So they cleared out the codes...did they not do something else???the codes tells them there are problems in an area of the engine...?
I don't know what gives with them.
This is what I would do.  Go to Wal-Mart automotive and pick up a spray can of disc brake or brake shoe cleaner.
(This product does not harm rubber and it comes out in a straight stream - thats why I use it)  Now, while the engine is idling at a steady speed(somehow get it that way), spray the joints where hoses connect to fittings, gaskets between two parts, any thing that is intake related etc...paying attention to the engine speed while youare doing this.- if the idle speed changes(faster or dies) which it should NOT do, because it is suppose tobe air tight from outside leaks, you got a problem there.  Try it again just to be sure.  Tighten or replace the offending part and try again.  You should be able to spray that motor everywhere without the engine speed changing.  The onlytime it should change is when you spray into the intake of the aircleaner.LoL
