Question
i have aquired from a friend a 1985 1600 ohc vw jetta, it needs a timing belt as ion the pld 1 its so worn, a row of approx 25 treeth have worn off, this is when it wouldnt start on my friend, i have starterd to take off the old 1, just need to know the markings where to set cam/ and bottom shaft before i fit new one, and try starting engine without breaking any valves etc!! help and pics greatly appreciated, i notice on top pulley a spot mark and on pulley to distributor same mark, cannot see for bottom pulley any marks, is it easy just to take out sparkplugs and check which valves should be ope/closed? and i know also what position rotor arm should be at? and is #1 nearest from pulleys or furthest? help greatly appreciated, John in the u.k

Answer
The fact it is that worn says that you gotta pull the head you got bent valves.  This belt is to be changed every 100,000 km even if it still looks like new.  You are gonna have to do that first.  Sorry bud.
Groove on pulley of cam should be at 12 o'clock, crankshaft is set by looking at the flywheel thru the inspection hole(you can unscrew the 2" cap) and look for a V groove to be at the 12 oclock position(there is a pointer inside there)  #1 is near the pulley.  Rotor only matters when setting the timing as the vehicle runs as the plug wires can move around the cap - last item to worry about as no mechanical parts will be hitting if it is out.
