Volkswagen Repair: 1995 Jetta GL - rich gas when cold, dirty check, brass connectors

Question
Hi Bernhard,

Thanks very much for taking this question.

I have a 1995 Jetta III 2.0L GL with 87K.

In the morning when it is first started up, there is a very strong gas smell from the whole car.

I would expect the engine to be running richer when warming up, but this is really too strong a smell to not think something is wrong.

Any pointers on where to look would be appreciated. I am fairly automotive savvy. The Jetta is just bought and I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of its engine systems and controls.

Answer
Check the air cleaner and change if dirty.  Check fuel line connections to fuel filters and whereever.    Check the flexibility of the lines (if they are the braided hose type chances are the rubber inside has deteriotated enough for the gas to soak to the braid.  May as well replace.  Clear plastic lines(if orangy in color or very hard) change them too.  hances are the hoses are rock hard and don't fit as snug to their brass connectors. (even with the clamp)
