Volkswagen Repair: Rear end vibration, rims tires, side tires

Question
Thanks for the reply.

I did swap out the new tire with the spare again, still feel the vibration.

Now, what I have noticed is that the vibration is more noticeable on cold tires (starting around 70 or 80 km/h)  As they warm up, the vibration becomes less evident and only noticeable at highway speeds.

I had the rim checked, does not look bent according to the technician.  I also had the suspension and bearing checked and the mechanic said everything looked really solid.  No play in the wheels, no humming.  The brakes looked good (I do not feel anything in the brake pedal while apply the brakes). He test drove it and could not notice the vibration.  Now, it was done on a local road which is not the smoothest.  I normally feel the vibration on highways or other smooth roads.

I have tested only the left side tires (by swapping with my spare).  I will be swapping the right ones to see if one of those tires may be the cause.

The alignment is off a little bit (pulls to the right), but this has always been there.

Could the slight alignment offset cause this?  Have I ruled out everything but the rims/tires?  How can I check the tires my self to see if maybe a belt broke in one of them.

I don't believe the vibration is from the engine or drivetrain as when I am on the highway and feel the vibration, I have have placed the car in neutral and coasted.  The vibration is still evident.

I don't believe this is a major issue, just really annoying.

Any further thoughts would be appreciated.

2000 Golf, 91000km. 2.0L gas engine

I had the driver side, rear tire blow on the highway doing about 110km/h.  I had to drive a couple of kilometers on the flat as the area was not safe to change the tire.

After putting on the full size spare, no vibrations were felt.

I had the tire replaced the next day. Vibrations started being felt at the rear end.  2 days later, tires were rotated and balanced (now rim with new tire on front left).

I am feeling a shimmy/vibration in the rear of the car (very little in the steering wheel, vibrations felt more in the seats).  What could be the cause of this since the tires were rotated and balanced?  The rim that the blown tire was on was checked for damage, but none seen.  I start to feel it around 90 to 100 km/h.

Could the alignment be out from the short trip on the flat tire?  Maybe the bearing is slightly warped?

I do not feel any vibrations while applying the brake.

Thanks

Don't go so far.   First re swap the ex-damaged tire rim with the spare and drive again.   See if it is the rim(doesn't matter that you rotated the tires, vibration location can be cross court if you will but that is where I would start.  If the swap eliminates the vibes then you got your answer.  A couple of K on the rim didn't help anything.  Bearing damage is not a concern.  The new tire may even be the problem.

Answer
This sounds to be more a tire thing if it matters if the tires are cold or warm...and you can feel it thru the seat.  Not necessarily a broken belt, more like the quality of tire.    Speed rotated balancing helps more than static balancing and/or your tires are slightly oval.  Not mechanical.
