Volkswagen Repair: shake/shimmy at speeds above 45 mph, wheel weights, wheel bolts

Question
I recently bought a vw beetle that was part way through a restoration project (but then it was left sitting for years).
It's a 68 sedan that when it is accelerated to 45 mph or above, the front end starts to shake or shimmy. The shake/shimmy varies in severity.
Where would I start looking to fix this problem, and what would I look for?
Any advice would be appreciated, and thank you for your time!

Answer
Obviously this is a front end thing so start by going to the front end grab the top of a tire and pull it back and forth real hard to see if there is a looseness in it.  Then, jack up the front end and spin the wheels and see if they run true or if you got a bent rim(or a bulging on the side of a tire.)The wheel if you shake it should have a little movement(a faint clicking) as the wheel bearings are not snugged up real tight.  Thats the way it should be.  Making it too tight will burn up the bearings.
Also check to be sure that all the wheel bolts are tight in their holes.  Do you see missing wheel weights?  Next check the steering damper (steering shock)and see whether it has been leaking.  Thats a start.
