Volkswagen Repair: Engine oil, vw beetle, excess gas

I have a 1973 VW Beetle (regular). I checked the oil this morning and noticed that it had a slight smell of gasoline. I was wondering if this is normal for Beetles. Or what was the cause and what can i do about it?

Are you sure about that, what I mean to  say some of the additives make the oil stink something other than oil.  Could be that.  If the spark plugs are regular tan in color the engine  is OK and no excess gas is getting in there unburnt.  That is the only way.  All I can say is check again or take the car for a good run then see.
