Volkswagen Repair: starter, battery clamps, starter solenoid

Question
The car is a 98 volkswagon jetta GSL four door. We just purchase it so not much history on it. The battery is charged but when you turn the the key it just clicks. What could the problem be?

Answer
You failed to mention automatic or standard.  First things first.  Take off the battery clamps and clean the posts so that they are shiny silver(use sandpaper) and also inside the clamps.  Then make sure the clamps are firmly afixed. Check the other end which is fastened to the starter for the same.  Try again.
 No go?
If auto, shift  into neutral and try the key again. If nothing changes, then shift thru the gears and go back to park and try again.
If standard, with out the clutch shift thru the all the gears, then try again and depress the clutch at same time.
If you still have the same level of click noise, and the click is coming from the engine compartment, then I would suspect the starter solenoid is shot.  You may still be able to get that as a seperate part.  Cost out at jobber shops compared to the dealer.  If your handy with a wrench you can swap the part yourself, any mechanic can do it.
That's all I can do for you right now
