Volvo Repair: 1988 244DL Volvo - Random acceleration problems, fuel pressure regulator, acceleration problems

Question
Hi! I found your website in my desperate search for an answer to my problem. I bought a 1988 244 DL Volvo about 9months ago. For the past 6months, I've had this random acceleration problem. It was repeatedly dying on hills when I tries to press the gas to go up, so I replaced the coil (which had failed the test at autozone). I was putting a fuel injector cleaner in the gasoline for a while and that seemed to help clean out the carbon. Then I opened the air mass meter valve slightly and that worked out well. For 3months, I really had no issues but yesterday I was driving and it did it again. It started choking and seemed like it wanted to die. I got out of the car, without turning it off, and opened the valve a little more - once again cured temporarily. It occured again today and I disconnected the air mass meter completely. It ran great to/from work (which is a 30mile drive round trip). Then I was on the highway, coming home, and it started doing it again! So I reconnected the air mass meter and that made it run well again. I'm all out of sorts of what to do. Thank you SOOOOOO much for your help as I'm way too broke to take it to the mechanic like it deserves. I've done a lot of work myself and thus far it has been a swell car that's easy to work on. I appreciate all your help.

Answer
Maggie, Most likely its the airmass meter itself or a possible ECT sensor issue causing the car to overfuel at times.  Fuel pressure regulator may be the culprit as well.  Unfortunately, these are educated guess and tests would need to be performed to confirm the symptoms.  Roger
