Volvo Repair: 88 760 turbo A/T - ignition key wont turn, lock cylinder, steering wheel

Question
key won't turn - another expert suggested that steering column must be replaced but also mentioned that the laser cut keys wear out.  Should I have another key made by the dealer (from the VIN #) before I consider replacing the steering column?

Answer
Do you have another key? Try that if you do. If you don't have a second key, this might be a a good time to get one. If you go that route, sure try the new key.
If it did this just all of a sudden, I would lean against a key problem. When it's a key or a lock cylinder, it's usually chronic for sometime until it just quits, not all at once.
Typically you don't need to replace the column piece unless you end up using a dent puller to get the lock cylinder out. Be sure the shifter is all the way into park and try wiggling the steering wheel while you turn the key. Make sure the steering wheel isn't just cramped over to far. IE: on a hill, tires against a curb etc.
