Volvo Repair: I Locked the trunk on my 1992 Volvo 940 GL and I Cant Open It Now, volvo 940 gl, breaking the key

Question
QUESTION: I did a manual lock of my trunk on my 1992 Volvo 940 GL Sedan and now I can't open it.  I'm supposed to turn the key clockwise in order to open the trunk and it will not turn.  I don't want to force it for fear of breaking the key -- I can't get to the trunk from the inside as the only opening available is from the small square opening in the center of the rear seat.  Can you help?

ANSWER:     Mike, no not really, Try spraying some lube into the key slot with a wand. Really soak it. Then try wiggling the key around untill it frees up? If you have another key, try that too. O'wise, try a really long extension and see if you can get the latch or striker unbolted. If you have a really small child, that might work too! VBG

QUESTION: Thank you. I'll try spraying WD40 into the key slot; I called the dealership and they indicated they think the locking mechanism may have gone bad - will need to drill out the lock and replace the mechanism - couple of hundred dollars + labor.  If lubing it and trying the key again doesn't work; I am thinking of busting out the lock myself, but not sure if that will keep it from lock after I get it opened.  Do you know?

Answer
If you drill out the lock cylinder you will see at the end a tab that inserts into the latch mechanism. There is a slot in the latch mechanism that this tab is inserted into. Put a screwdriver in the slot and rotate it as you would the key to release. Installing the new lock cylinder is easy. It comes with a new key. Put the new key in the new lock cylinder and insert the assembly. HTH
