Volvo Repair: ignition, lock cylinder, volvo s60

Question
sorry,  i have a volvo S60  2004-  i dont understand what you mean,  why does the ignition lock come with a new key-  the dealership has explained that the ignition switch/lock has to be special ordered and made based on my specific key code for about 600$-  so we looked on line and found new one for about 40 with one key, so if my husband installs it, can we easily get a new key or use my old auto entry keys remote somehow?

Answer
Melanie, there are two pieces you are confusing as one. The ignition switch is only the electrical part of the system. You could turn it with a screwdriver and function if the lock cylinder was removed.  It is connected to the Lock cylinder(The piece you put the key in) by a tab/tang. The switch is not vehicle specific. The lock cylinder is.
The key fob (remote) is coded to the body computer. It is only for central locking/alarm etc. Not for primarty functions like accessory, on Start. The key part and lock cylinder have to match. They are not electronically coded, but coded with a set of varying length pins called tumblers. Usually five to six in a row. The location and length of the pins determine the "bumps" in the key. I know it's not the same as old time stuff, but even the laser cut keys work on the same principal.
Short story, if you only replace the switch, that's all you have to do. Re-use the old lock cylinder and keys. Make sense?
