Volvo Repair: HEAT SWITCH, volvo s80, 15minutes

Question
QUESTION: Hi Roger, my volvo S80 dies on me, after inspection i found my fan relay is becoming hot. It appears that as the relay gets hot and I slow down the car dies. Proably the computer kills the engine. I think my heat switch is faulty and does not inform the relay to stop giving power to the fan once the engine water is changed through the thermostat. Is this scenario possibly correct?

I need to travel 800km to the nearest dealer to check. You think I can drive? it appears that when it is cool weather it is OK. Only when it is hot is dies more regularly. Please advise, thanks.

ANSWER: ALec, most likely its not the switch, it the actual fan assembly.  I have replaced quite a few of them.  Well if its cool out, try the travel, but you should keep your eye on the temperature to be safe.  Roger

QUESTION: Thanks Roger for your feedback.

What I however need to know is where exactly should the temperature be on the gauge in normal circumstances for the S80.

ANSWER: Alec, if its in the middle, you are fine.  As long as it doesnt go into the red area.  Roger

QUESTION: HiRoger,I started the car in my garage, pull her out, close the garage whilst she is idling and than drove to the office, stop, switch it off. After 15minutes I start it again and drove about 8 kms to our security check point, stop and switched it off normally. I did not experence any problem whatsoever. It ws cool weather, heat guage was normal, car drove normal as I wa doing 80 - 90 km/phour. After 40minutes the car would start. It turns but dont start. I than decided to buy new relays (for the fan and starter), waited 3days for it to arrive and replace the old ones but the car still turns without starting. Battery is OK/sufficient. I dont know what to look at anymore. can you advise me where to start looking for a possible proble since I cant accept that it can just stop starting like that after driving normal. I was on m way to the dealer to check it out but they are about 800km from where I stay.

Answer
Alec, there isnt anything else you can do.  The car needs to be hooked up to the computer to find out what is going on.  It can be a module or a key reader problem.  Without the computer, even I cant help you. These  cars are all computer controlled.  The days of swapping parts out is over.  Roger
