Volvo Repair: Volvo V70 XC 01, volvo v70, intermittent problem

Question

Question
Hello:
I was having an an intermittent problem where the transmission felt like it dropped into or shifts gears very hard. It happened most often when the transmission downshifted into the lower gears like when downshifting to go up a hill. As it shifted there was a significant jolt to the car. The problem even occurred when sitting at a light as if the car was not really in gear and then finally engaged into gear. When you pulled away from a light, the problem was likely to occur as well. It did not happen every time or even predictably. Finally once when this happened the warning light came on and said transmission service required and the check engine light came on. I took it in and the dealership suggested trying a software upgrade, which they completed. Since that time, that problem has remedied and the warning lights have not come back on. However, periodically while accelerating the engine revs, the RPMs jump and then return to normal within a second. This has happened 4-5 times in the last month. What is happening and what should my next course of action be? I'm fearing the worst, if that come to pass what are my options?

Answer
Nate, fear the worse because its coming.  Technically you are supposed to do the download.  If it works, great.  Since its been done and the trans is still acting up, there in a internal issue inside the trans and it would need to be replaced.  I would take it back to the dealer but they probably will say the same thing.  Sorry for the bad news.  Roger
