Volvo Repair: power, fuel pressure regulator, spark plug wires

Question
I have a 1985 Volvo 740GLE non turbo. I have been trying to get it running top notch and it is there except for: sometimes when I start it there seems to be no power... when the gas pedel is pressed a little hard there seems to be no power then if I shut it off sometimes twice and restart it willrun fine. It does it sometimes in the morning and sometimes after stopping at the store or something. When it hits it runs great and getting around 20MPG in town and 25MPG on interstate running 75 - 80MPH. hope you can help with this.

Answer
Skip, first thing I would check is to pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator when it's acting up and see if it's wet with fuel. If it is, replace the fuel pressure regulator. Then check for vacuum leaks. Especially intake manifold gaskets. After that, I would look at the secondary ignition system, plugs, cap, rotor, spark plug wires and especially, the coil wire. Next move on to the air mass meter. HTH
