please could you tell me, is it possible to reset the service indicator on my 2002 volvo s60 d5 without using a garage reset tool.

Nick, yes, Follow these instructions:  Key to position 1, hold odometer reset button until milage clears, turn key to pos 2 while still holding odometer reset button.  Two things may happen.  the service light will flash or something on the info center will come up.  Release the button after the service light flashes or you hear a beep sound.  If it doesnt work, keep trying.  The sometimes can be a pain.  Roger
